Budget 2019: Aadhaar is enough to file income tax return, PAN is not mandatory

Currently, PAN cards are mandatory for filing income tax returns

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday made the first announcement in his Budget. Now you can use your Aadhaar card instead of a PAN card to file your income tax return. “More than 120 crore Indians now have Aadhaar cards. So for the sake of ease of taxpayers, I propose to use Aadhaar card instead of PAN card. “Those who do not have a PAN card, will have to enter the Aadhaar number at the time of returning the Income Tax,” the finance minister said during the budget presentation in parliament. Currently, PAN cards are mandatory for filing income tax returns.

The Aadhaar card is easily accessible by NRIs when they arrive in the country. As per the current norms, the expatriates had to wait 180 days to get the Aadhaar card. Speaking during the budget speech, Nirmala Sitharaman said that he recommends that Aadhaar card should be issued to expatriates with Indian passports arriving in the country without waiting for 180 days.
